On the other hand, the Fourth Crusade that sacked Constantinople in 1204 was originally directed towards the Holy Land. The crusaders supported a Byzantine usurper who was killed, (and thus could not pay them). so the crusaders sacked Constantinople against the pope's wishes. He excommunicated those who did so.
